Growing up in an Irish Catholic family afflicted by the 'Troubles' and having a different perspective than most, I always felt I had one foot in the land of the surreal and the abstract.
After studying Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism in Art School at Massey University in New Zealand, it was here I was able to unlock my unconsciousness as a valid reality and over the years have evolved a style that allows the idle mind to control the brush, which I call Mindscaping.
Drawing influence from aspects of culture and fellow artists; Wassily Kandinsky for his use of melody inspired works and geometrical shapes. Jackson Pollock for his 'Drip Painting' techniques, Rothko for his compositional colour fields, and traditional tribal designs from Celtic art, my work explores elements of escapism through bold colour pallets, dream like imagery and intricate brush work.
It is Picasso who was quoted to say he 'Paints to stop thinking'...
This same reason is what my Mindscapes are born out of.
A need to settle the mind, switch off and allow the ink to flow.
Coined by the Surrealist Artist Salvador Dali, Bulletism is the process that involves shooting ink at a blank canvas which results in a formation of ink blots. The artist then develops images based on what is seen.
